On Her Majesty's Service: Sea Stories of a U.S. Marine, Book 3 Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rusty Jones, USMC Ret -- Spicer comes through again! : Thanks again, Bill Spicer. I thoroughly enjoyed “On Her Majesty’s Service” as much as his first two books covering his early Marine Corps career. Volume 3 is a much different view of the world as he is one of the very few Exchange Officers with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. His recall is truly amazing. He again shows the ability to tell a complete story, containing anecdotes certainly, but with the context necessary to bring the events to life. Throughout this journey, his exceptional maturity and judgment shows through at every turn. Readers with absolutely no military experience will enjoy the Spicer family’s journey and experiences as they are plunked into another country’s culture. Foreign Service, other government employees and international corporation members will get an education on just how challenging and rewarding an overseas assignment can be. He has given us a very special gift with his books; not only does he spell out his personal slice of history, he does it with a wry approach that is refreshing on many levels. Bill Spicer and I were in the same Harrier squadron some years after Volume 3 ends. I am truly looking forward to Volume 4 with great personal interest, as I will then be able to see those important yet turbulent years through his eyes. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from ECI-Tampa -- Great story of an interesting unique adventure : This is a continuing story of an incredible military career with many interesting twists, situations and opportunities. The authors memory provides highly detailed and accurate details that help you see it as he did years ago. It is a great read for a low investment and one that you will enjoy if you want to understand more about military life outside of combat. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2013 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from jc -- Another great adventure : I have known Bill Spicer since 1976 having been in the same AV8 Harrier ( Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lynn Harkless -- A Right Jolly Good Tale : Well Bill and Marguerite, you've done it again! Your life story gets better with each passing page, and I've read them all to date. This captivating two year slice of your life from the steamy jungles of Viet Nam right into the Culdrose Clamp of jolly ol' England and on to surviving the frigid ice caves in Antarctic, left me giddy with anticipation for the next chapter in the life of a very special couple. Your life is the stuff of good theatre and you tell it with flair and humor. Your story is told with such zest for a life well lived that I was awed, educated and made to laugh out loud. I loved the alternating interplay between the military and domestic side of the story as it brought your very remarkable wife into the story as the equal partner she is. I especially loved the cantankerous LtCdr Digby Lickfold, how Marguerite trained Licky (and why they are called Alsatians rather than German Shepherds), her hilarious initiating of the oh so proper British ladies with nachos and margaritas, and your appreciation for the responsibility of being an American in a foreign country. And the ending, dear readers, oh the ending is NOT to be missed! But then it's just the beginning of the next adventurous venture in the life of an amazing storyteller and his equally impressive wife. Kudos, Bill and Marguerite! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Supersnake -- Great read and memories : Having worked on harriers in the Marine corps, this was a great read. I was attached to VMA 513 when the first harrier squadron was formed. Semper Fi. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2015 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Viking -- Sea Stories of a US Marine, On Her Majesty's Service : I have know the author for many years, flown Harriers with him, toasted many friends, and consider him one of my closest friends. I have read all three books now, and Bill's writing skill continue to mature. This book has more depth and descriptive prose than Books 1 and 2, and they were both very enjoyable. Over the years Bill has regaled me with stories of his tour with the Brits, and now I have a first class visual of those stories. I am looking forward to Book 4, in which I am sure I will recognize myself. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2013 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Norma J. witherspoon -- The stories keep getting better. : It's a very interesting adventure story--and realizing it is a true-life story makes it even more fascinating. The Spicers have led a wonderful adventure filled life. Will be glad to hear more. WR has a wonderful talent for story telling!!! Marguerite is very special to cope with all the situations she had to adapt to. A couple of heros!!!! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2013 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from David C. Corbett -- Five Stars : Very interesting, and something not many pilots get the opportunity to do during their careers. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2014 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jimmy -- A fine tale : This is an accurate story of a fine officer of the USMC who served with great distinction with the Royal Navy. He recounts the time with great interest in an old fashioned country that had many differences with his home land but whose traditions overcame other limitations. His account of family life in Cornwall is well worth reading alone. This book should be essential reading for any officer sent on exchange service to the Royal Navy where ideas and activity experiences can be compared and developed and is superb reading for anyone who wishes to learn why - no matter what are the activities of politicians and governments - the armed services of the USA and Great Britain work so well together. There is great mutual respect and friendship between them. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 13, 2013 )
