The author covers in depth 220+ years of bad behavior in and around D.C.’s Capitol Building: assassinations, bombings, financial scandals, sex scandals, hangings, duels, the riots of 2020 and 2021, and 1835 and 1932. Who knew the Senate has been bombed three times, and the bloodiest incident in the history of the House took place with the shooting up of four congressmen in 1954? Or that congressmen have fought each other with rifles? Some heroes and major achievements are sprinkled in with the villains, the felonies, and the femme fatales. The author knows of what he writes, as he’s written a dozen books on history, science, & politics, has worked for the Senate and White House, & has given “scandal tours” of the capital region for most of a decade. We learn the Capitol has had trouble from the start, with the firing of D.C.’s designer, Pierre L’Enfant, and crisis meetings to elect a new President during the very first session of the House of Representatives in 1801, sessions that barely averted a early civil war. At the same time the first person convicted of murder in the new capital was strung up on the Capitol Building’s lawn. A reader would be hard-pressed to find a better primer on the Congress’ tumultuous past, or present. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2021 )

Grimace and giggle as the founding fathers and innovators of the time that appear so polished and serious in the textbooks scramble to stay relevant, get into bar fights, do everything they can to legally shoot each other, and reach...historical heights of hypocrisy and (very righteous) hilarity as the Capitol tries to keep itself together.
